UvA Pride Lecture: Bisexuality - feelings, behavior, identities

In the LGBT community, bisexuality is the most invisible issue. Although lots of people have bisexual feelings or have sex with men and women, only few of them identify as bisexual. Therefore bisexuals are seen as strange and not able to decide whether they are gay or straight. Bisexuality is also often considered as a fase of transition between heterosexuality and homosexuality. In this lecture we will speak about bisexual feelings, bisexual behavior and bisexual identities. The way bisexuality can function as a bridge to connect the extremes in the sexual continuum, heterosexuality and homosexuality, will be addressed. Talking about bisexuality and sexual diversity is also necessary to make people more aware of their own sexuality, which, in our opinion, is an important way to decrease homo-, bi-, and transphobia.

Erwin Heyl is sociologist and is chair of the Dutch National Bisexual Network LNBi. Nico Lippe is coordinator education at the LNBi. Both have been active in the LNBi for many years, and are constantly trying to call attention to the bisexual issue.
